Fishing Derby - Since 1995
Fishing Derby is an opportunity for 250 physically Challenged Students, both from L.I.S.D. and U.I.S.D. and their family members to enjoy an outdoor activity and for these students to experience the fun and sense of accomplishment associated with fishing and the outdoors. Lots of fishing, games and food are provided for participants and their families on this all day event.


SPECIAL STUDENT OF THE MONTH CEREMONY - SINCE 1998
Special student of the month ceremony is held once a month at the different High Schools for L.I.S.D. and U.I.S.D. 20 Specially Challenged students are recognized for their super achievements and academic skills which benefit them physically, socially, mentally and spiritually. Families and the community at large are strengthened and unified by participating with specially challenged students in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance.

TOYS FOR TEJANITOS - JUDGE VALDEZ CO-CHAIRED TOYS FOR TEJANITOS FROM DECEMBER 2001 - DECEMBER 2005
The goal and purpose of this community project was to assist families in need of toys for their children on Christmas day. Twenty five families from each elementary school, both L.I.S.D. and U.I.S.D. school districts in Laredo received Christmas Toys and a box of groceries for their children from Santa. Each year was a huge success, this project was able to bring a smile to thousands of children and parents for Christmas.

SUPPLY OUR STUDENTS (S.O.S.) - SINCE 2000
This event helps the disadvantaged students of both Laredo School Districts. It is intended to benefit those in most need of school supplies. Donors get the satisfaction of knowing that they are giving to a noble cause and they get great tejano entertainment in return. People donating items or cash receive tickets to the concert. Approximately 60 tons of schools supplies have been collected.

AVERY JOHNSON CAMP
Avery Johnson conducts a Basketball Camp for students that have been selected Via Lottery and perform community service. This is an opportunity for the youth of Laredo to attend a basketball Camp conducted by a professional Basketball Player. Avery Johnson is a great role model for both youth and adults.

OPERATION KICK-IT
This program benefits students from L.I.S.D. and U.I.S.D. Students are able to hear life stories from three inmates. The students learn about the dangers and consequences involved in the illicit use of drugs and how those decisions can affect their entire life.

STRAIGHTWAY PROGRAM
The straightway program is tailored to the students comprehensive level, music, dance and drama. True life stories are used to entertain, educate and inform the students of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, violence, suicide and other negative choices. Not only does the program discourage wrong actions and choices, it encourages and shows the incredible benefits of making the right ones.
YOUTH CONFERENCE
Approximately 1,600 students from both School Districts participate in this event. Singer and entertainer Patsy Torres Positive Tour Show sends out a powerful musical message to students regarding prevention of drug abuse, gang related problems, peer pressure, relationships, suicide, etc.
