Historical Commission Banner

The historical commission concept was established for all the 254 counties of Texas in the early 1960’s. Members, who serve on a volunteer basis, are named by the county judges with approval of county commissioners. In 1963, Webb County Judge Roberto Benavides established the Webb County Historical Commission by naming the first commission members. Miss Rose Elizabeth Vela was elected chairperson of the commission. She served until 1979. During her administration, the commission published a popular songbook on the musical heritage of Webb County. Dr. Leon de King was elected in 1979 and re-elected in 1981. The last two publication projects were a cookbook and a 48-page booklet describing the historical markers in Laredo and Webb County.

From its start, the commission has organized historical activities for the public such as field trips, speeches by historians, and seminars. An ongoing activity is the research, documentation, and application to the Texas Historical Commission for placing official Texas Historical Markers and Texas Historic Landmarks in Webb County. The commission also does research and documentation for National Register Landmark and District applications in Webb County. Presently, there are more than 60 historic markers in Laredo and Webb County.

The commission also took the initiative to organize the Webb County Heritage Foundation, a private non-profit organization. It was founded in 1980, and is dedicated to the preservation of the historical wealth that encompasses Laredo and Webb County
