    The Aztec District Boy Scouts will soon be able to enjoy a brand new archery/BB gun range thanks to a kind donation from Commissioner Jerry Garza and Commissioner Frank Sciaraffa. A $27,000 check was made out to the scouts in late July. The 3-month construction project is expected to be completed by late September. The new ranges will serve over 800 Boy Scouts and about 500 Girl Scouts in the Laredo and surrounding areas.

    Laredo Manor Apartments Town Hall Meeting – July 21
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Several dozen residents from Laredo Manor Apartments on Pct. 3 gave input during a scheduled town hall meeting with Commissioner Jerry Garza. Garza was accompanied by a representative from Community Action Agency and the U.S. Census Bureau to inform the public on available funding and how to be proactive on the 2010 Census. Commissioner Garza has been having these types of meetings since taking office.

    Ruthe B. Cowl Check Presentation – June 3, 2008

    Webb County Commissioners Jerry Garza and Frank Sciaraffa donated $15,000 to the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center. The funds will be used to upgrade the center’s day care playground. Over 200 children use the play ground on a monthly basis. In September 2008, the State of Texas mandates that this 40-year-old playground be upgraded to have cushioning, and other pertinent modern equipment. Total cost for this project will be $67,000, with various contributions coming from the local community.

    311 Call Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony– February 25, 2008
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Mayor Raul Salinas, Judge Danny Valdez, and members from the City Council joined Commissioner Jerry Garza for the unveiling of the new 311 Call Center. The joint project between the City of Laredo and Webb County allows anyone living in the County to dial 311 and be connected to a live representative for service requests. Pot hole repairs, precinct voting information, and stray animal pickups are some of the questions that can be answered. The 311 Call Center is opened seven days a week from 7am-11pm and is located at 1200 Washington St (Old Tex-Mex Building).

    Gateway Clinic, Glaucoma Awareness Month Proclamation 
    January 8, 2008

    In a ceremony held at Gateway Community Health Clinic, Commissioner Pct. 3 Jerry Garza proclaimed the month of January as Glaucoma Awareness Month. Close to one-hundred members from the community, and staff at Gateway Clinic heard several speakers on the importance of glaucoma and how it is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness.     North Side International Park Town Hall Meeting – November 6, 2007
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Residents living near International Boulevard gave input to Commissioner Jerry Garza for the proposed 12 acre North Side International Park. $725,000 has been allocated to the construction of the park that will feature a proposed basket/baseball/soccer/football field, hike-and-bike trail, and a skate ramp.     Domestic Violence Proclamation – September 28, 2007

    Webb County Commissioner Pct. 3 Jerry Garza helped proclaim the month of October 2007 Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Ten silhouette bodies were displayed to the public, each of them representing a woman who has died in Laredo from severe domestic abuse. Members from the community including: Customs & Border Protection Agency, Webb County Sheriff’s/Constable Office, among other agencies were on hand.

    Buenos Aires Town Hall Meeting- September 5, 2007
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Commissioner Jerry Garza invited several hundred constituents from central Laredo to a town hall meeting. Garza asked for input from the community for a new $700,000, 3,500-sq. ft. community center. Over 50 people attended the town hall meeting.

    Backpack to School Giveaway – August 30, 2007
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Commissioner Pct. 3 Jerry Garza donated over 20 backpacks to students at Don Jose Gallegos Elementary School (formerly, Buenos Aires Elementary). Joining Commissioner Garza were Laredo Independent School District superintendent Veronica Guerra, district board members and staff from the school. One student was anxious to receive the backpacks filled with essential supplies for the school year.

    Trautmann Park – August 2007

    Webb County Commissioner Jerry Garza has collaborated with United Independent School District board members to build a 10-acre park in north Laredo. The $725,000 Trautmann Park will feature football, soccer, volleyball, basketball facilities and a hike/bike trail. Commissioner Garza states that there are no recreational facilities of this kind in the area and it will be beneficial for families residing in the upper east Precinct 3.

    Webb County Discount Prescription Cards- August 15, 2007
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 
    In an attempt to help families in Webb County with the mounting costs of health care, Webb County Commissioner Jerry Garza unveiled a cooperative plan with the National Association of Counties (NACo) to offer prescription discount cards to all residents living in Webb County. On average, cardholders will save 20-50% off certain prescription medications. The free cards are now available and can be picked up at the Webb County Courthouse.

    In early January 2007, Commissioner Garza received a call about a family living in horrid conditions in central Laredo. After visiting the family of six, Garza and others helped transport them immediately to a local hotel. The family has been transitioned to an affordable house in central Laredo.

    Several families living in Precinct 3 received an invitation from Commissioner Jerry Garza to the Buenos Aires Community Center. When they arrived there was a surprise in store: shoe-box gifts and a well-stuffed food bag in time for the 2007 Christmas holiday.

    Thanks to donations from Commissioner Jerry Garza and area businesses, more than 30 children from the local Springfield Headstart received their first-ever bicycle. Children smiled as they rode their bikes in front of proud parents and Commissioner Garza.

    On December 7, 2006, Commissioner Garza announced that Webb County constituents will now be able to pay their traffic tickets via the Internet. Tickets from the Sheriff's, DPS, and Constable offices are the only ones that can be paid using this service. Judge Oscar Martinez was also instrumental in this electronic project.     Over 80 members of the local community joined Commissioner Pct. 3 Jerry Garza as he announces plans for the new $720,000 3,200 sq. ft. Buenos Aires Community Center to be located in central Laredo. The community center is expected to be completed by February 2008.

    Webb County Commissioners Jerry Garza and Frank Sciaraffa donated $25,000 to the Aztec District Boy Scouts in Laredo, TX for the purchase of the first-ever mobile Rock Wall in South Texas. Over 1,000 boy scouts will benefit from this structure every year at Camp sache and throughout Texas’ southern region.
